Arizona Cardinals great Darnell Dockett re-signs

Darnell Dockett officially re-signed with the Arizona Cardinals this afternoon, Monday, July, 25 2016. This was only a ceremonial contract signing, giving Dockett the opportunity to retire from the National Football League as a member of the Arizona Cardinals. He has been plagued with injuries the past two seasons and has been unable to play since 2013.

Dockett was drafted by the Cardinals in the third round of the 2004 NFL Draft, behind the team’s first round pick, Larry Fitzgerald and second round pick Karlos Dansby. He was a four year starter at Florida State University, where he recorded ten and a half sacks and 247 tackles, 65 of them for losses setting a school record.

During his first three seasons with Arizona, Dockett had pretty quiet numbers, only accounting for six sacks and 118 total tackles. In 2007, he had a breakout year, recording nine sacks and 58 tackles. During the 2008 season, Dockett recorded four sacks and 49 tackles during the regular season. In the 2008 postseason, he added another 11 tackles and had three sacks in Super Bowl XLIII against the Pittsburgh Steelers, tying the record with Reggie White for the most sacks in a Super Bowl.

Dockett tore his ACL during the Cardinals training camp for the 2014 season, and spent the entire season on injured reserve. At the end of the season, he was released from the team after declining to take a pay cut. Dockett signed with the San Francisco 49ers, but was cut by them before the regular season after dealing with a rib injury during training camp.

Over his ten year career with the Cardinals, Dockett only missed two games prior to his ACL injury in 2014. He finishes his career with 40.5 sacks, 459 total tackles, and four interceptions. He was selected to the Pro Bowl three times.

Darnell Dockett will be missed both on the field as well as off the field by fans. Someday, perhaps we will see his name in the Cardinals Ring of Honor along with greats like Adrian Wilson and Kurt Warner.
