Modern Family's Ariel Winter has been super vocal about her recent breast reduction surgery. She's proving herself as a body-positive role model who made an important decision that helped her to feel better physically and mentally. By showing her scars and talking about loving her still-there curves, she's become an inspiration to a lot of girls. Now, in a new essay in Time, she's opening up about how the surgery affected her and changed her life for the better.

"My life changed over the course of a summer," she writes. "I came back to film season 3 of Modern Family, and I knew that I looked totally different than when we'd wrapped season 2. Suddenly, I was just over 5 feet tall and was an F-cup."

Ariel says that quick development made her look 19 years old when she was only 13 and 14. And all anyone wanted to do was talk about her cleavage.

"I'd go to awards shows and the next day see everyone on the Internet telling me I shouldn't look like this and dress like that," she writes. "The conversation became about my looks instead of my talent and work - everything that I didn't want."

She even started getting inappropriate "gross" messages from older male fans. Ugh.

Still, Ariel says mean online comments did not push her into having surgery. She was just uncomfortable and unhappy. "It's really difficult to be such a small girl and have so much weight on your chest. You physically hurt."

After her surgery, she felt happier and better physically almost right away. Her back and shoulders didn't hurt, and she couldn't wait to go shopping. "I was so excited to be able to find things that fit properly instead of hiding in a baggy sweater," she writes. "That meant the world to me."

The star notes that she's gotten a lot of criticism for her surgery, but in the end, she did it for her, writing: "In the end, I think it's all about how you feel - not what other people think."
