Arguments begin on Iowa six-week abortion ban

Oral arguments have begun in court for Iowa’s six-week abortion ban today.

Protestors were outside of the Iowa Supreme Court as justices heard sides both sides of the issue. The law passed last summer and bans abortion as soon as cardiac activity is detected, generally around six weeks. Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, the Emma Goldman Clinic and Sarah Traxler, M.D. are fighting the law. They say the Fetal Heartbeat Bill (House File 732) fails the undue burden test, placing substantial obstacles on an individual seeking an abortion. State lawyers argue the Constitution of the State of Iowa does not recognize the fundamental right to an abortion, and people defending abortion are wanting a unique spot in the eyes of the law. No decision was made, and the session ended around 2:30 p.m.

The Fetal Heartbeat Bill was passed in Iowa after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. For more information, click here.
