Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Kevin Pillar has become a favourite amongst fans for his incredible effort on the field.
However, the centre fielder made a questionable baserunning decision during Sunday’s loss to the New York Yankees when he unsuccessfully tried to steal third base with two outs and his team down by four runs.
But as J.P. Arencibia stated on Digging in with J.P. Arencibia, this is going to happen occasionally with a player like Pillar.
“He just plays hard, man. And there’s sometimes that playing hard gets you in trouble,” the former Blue Jays catcher said. “But, again, when you go down to it and you strip it all back and you go OK let’s look at this as a whole and not just a play, you go with the human being. Kevin Pillar is probably one of the best team guys around.”
It doesn’t help that the Blue Jays are in the midst of a miserable season and John Gibbons has all but had his fate sealed with the club.
“Just talking to a few guys, I think that they’re starting to feel Gibby — his mood changing a little bit,” said Arencibia. “When you’re with people for too long, everything becomes kind of annoying. And then when you’re with people when things are struggling, then it really becomes annoying.”
