Area players and coaches earn BCANY Awards

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – The area’s best have collected some hardware for their excellence in high school basketball.

The annual Basketball Coaches Association of New York (BCANY) in the region has named its MVP’s and Coach of The Year Awards for Section IV. In Class AAA, Elmira’s Ellie Clearwater and Mariah Matias share the Co-MVP Award. In Class AA, Horseheads’ Sophia Bonnell was named MVP for the Blue Raiders.

Elmira Express girls basketball coach A’Don Allen was named Coach of The Year in Class AAA for helping the program to its first Section IV title since 2020. Horseheads’ Andy Scott was named Coach of The Year in Class AA for the Blue Raiders after team secured their first Section IV Championship since 2015.

On the boys side, Elmira’s Chris Woodard won MVP in Class AAA and Waverly’s Joey Tomasso is the MVP in Class B as both players led their respective teams to Section IV Championships. Elmira boys head coach Toby Foster, in his first season, won the Class AAA Coach of The Year for the Express.

A complete list is below of each All-Star list for both the boys and girls side. Several Elmira region players also made that special list. All-star teams are based on voting from Section 4 coaches. The all-star teams can be from any class, and conference.
