(WJW) – If you live in ‘The 440’ starting today (March 1) a new area code is coming to the region.

For years, the 440 area code has served, and will still serve, the northern portion of Ohio, including Ashtabula, Eastlake, Elyria, Lorain, Mentor, North Olmsted, North Ridgeville, North Royalton, Parma, Parma Heights, Rocky River, Solon, Strongsville, Westlake and Willoughby.

But, due to a projected “third quarter 2024 exhaust of the 440 area code” — a new one was needed.

The approval of an area code overlay, or the addition of a new area code, was made late last year by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. The North American Numbering Plan Administrator then announced in January that the area code “436” had been selected.

According to Verizon, the new 436 area code will start being assigned to users on March 1, 2024.

According to the Public Utilities Commission, existing telephone customers do not need to change their phone numbers and can keep their current area code.

But, customers in the 440 area code region may be assigned a number in the new 436 area code when a new service or line is requested on or after March 1, according to Verizon.
