Waves of Arctic air are expected to surge into the High Desert late Tuesday, dropping high temperatures into the 40s and bringing rain, heavy wind and snow.

The storm system will move into the High Desert late this week, bringing rain on Friday and Saturday, the National Weather Service reported. The storm is expected to move passed the area by Sunday.

High temperatures in the 40s are expected Wednesday through Saturday in Apple Valley, Barstow, Hesperia and Victorville. Also highs in the 30s in Phelan and Wrightwood.

For those traveling to Las Vegas, rain is expected on Friday and Saturday, with high temps in the low 50s. It's already snowed this month in Vegas, the first time in four years.

Cold temperatures in the Victor Valley, Barstow, Las Vegas and much of Southern California could last until March.

Snowfall is expected on Thursday in Hesperia, the Cajon Pass and the Phelan area. Also, Thursday through Saturday in the local mountain areas of Big Bear, Lake Arrowhead and Wrightwood.

Mountain snow could be fairly significant Thursday and Friday, with snow levels dropping to 2,000 to 3,000 feet, the NWS reported.

Chief Meteorologist Ben Brissey at Bensweather said mountain travelers should be prepared and always carry tire chains.

A high wind watch has also been issued from Tuesday to Wednesday afternoon for Apple Valley, Lucerne Valley and all mountain and desert regions. Peak gusts are expected over 70 mph.

The coast-to-coast storm from the north will drop into California and the rest of the U.S. this week, with snow, ice, rain, flooding and severe weather affecting many parts of the country.
