May 8—May 8, 2014 — Longtime Bemidji mayor Doug Peterson has passed away, at the age of 75. Peterson served as the city's mayor for over two decades, from 1975 until 2000. During that time Bemidji saw substantial change, with considerable development on the city's west side and the south shore.

May 8, 1999 — Anglers in Minnesota are gearing up for the state fishing opener, with good conditions expected over the weekend. Anglers traveling from near and far are expected to take over the area's lakes and streams in hopes of enjoying the weather and companionship, and maybe getting a bite.

May 8, 1974 — Truckers in the Bemidji area will be holding a meeting to discuss the possibility of a boycott of services in protest of high fuel prices. The meeting will be held in St. Paul as a part of the Midwest Truckers Association. Over 85% of truckers nationwide have already voted in favor of a shutdown.

May 8, 1924 — The Bemidji Country Club is getting ready to open its golfing season with an upcoming tournament. The greens have been cleared and made ready for the competition, and the country club is anticipating a busy summer as locals and tourists alike take advantage of the course.
