In this From the Archives report from 2017, former KETK reporter Trent Bennet spoke with a group of East Texas Fishermen who set a record at the Gar Commander Competition on Toledo Bend Reservoir.

“We were just going to go fishing that night, we were just like hey lets get the guys together it’s going to be good weather we’ve been looking at it all week,” said fisherman Zach Royce.

Then they entered the competition and happened upon a massive fish.

“I was in the back of the boat, getting a drink, goofing off. I had been in the front the whole time when I heard someone say ‘oh my gosh’ and when I look up, and I’ve seen a lot of big fish, and I say ‘oh crap that’s a big fish’,” said another fisherman. “I look up and all I see is the back end and I knew immediately it was a monster.”

The fish measured in at eight-feet-long and weighed more than 258 pounds. The rest was history.
