Archaeology workshop to offer youth a chance at hands-on learning

May 13—CASS LAKE — The Chippewa National Forest will host a youth archaeology workshop near Cass Lake from June 11-13.

The purpose of the workshop is to offer local youth an opportunity to learn about archaeology as well as the fascinating history of the Chippewa National Forest through hands-on experience working with professional archaeologists engaged in archaeological research.

The workshop is open to students in grades 8-9, who are either entering eighth or ninth grade in the fall or who completed seventh or ninth grade this year.

Participants will spend three days working alongside forest service archaeologists and other national forest staff. They will be exposed to the techniques of archaeological excavation, data collection and artifact analysis.

One of the workshop's goals is to teach local youth to respect the social practices, belief systems and values of peoples and cultures through the study of the material objects they left behind.
