Arapahoe County deputy fired after conviction for providing gun to felon

DENVER (KDVR) — On Monday, a deputy sheriff at the Arapahoe County Detention Facility, Johnny Alvarado, was found guilty of providing a firearm to a felon.

This case started with a routine home visit from a U.S. probation officer. The officer visited Kyle Garcia, a felon on supervised release, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado.

During the probation officer’s visit, he found a loaded firearm in a closet, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Garcia admitted to “having the firearm, handling it, and racking the slide to see if there was ammunition in the firearm,” according to the release.

Alvarado, Garcia’s brother-in-law, admitted to the probation officer that he provided the firearm to Garcia knowing he was a felon, the release states.

Garcia pleaded to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and was sentenced to 66 months of probation.

A jury convicted Alvarado on March 4, according to the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office. On Tuesday, the sheriff’s office announced Alvarado’s termination, effective immediately.
