APS African American Empowerment Summit highlights skill-building, community wellbeing
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) invited high schoolers around the metro to the third annual African American Student Empowerment Summit on Saturday.
The summit allowed students to build their social knowledge, develop skills around being a strong ally, and learn about and celebrate their culture and community.
This year’s event was themed “U in Community.”

“The African American and Black population is not the largest population, so what we’re really wanting is for our students to feel seen, to feel like they’re part of the community, and that they can communicate and collectively work with each other,” said Coordination School Health Senior Director Daphne Strader.
The summit is part of one of the district’s goals to “emerge stronger” by expanding opportunities for students to develop, nurture/strengthen their skills, mindsets, and habits for success post-graduation.
