Apple’s buying spree continues with reported AlgoTrim acquisition
Apple confirmed earlier this month that it had acquired second screen TV company Matcha.tv, and it also purchased mapping startup Embark last week. Now, the company has seemingly acquired yet another small firm. Rapidus on Wednesday reported that Apple has acquired Sweden-based software startup AlgoTrim, which specializes in image and video compression that might help Apple’s iOS device lineup process media faster in the future. “AlgoTrim has developed algorithms for lossless compression of processing instructions in operating systems and applications,” Rapidus said in its report. ”Apart from speeding up processing, the compression reduces the use of flash memory in for example RISC-processors.” This would mark the third recent Swedish acquisition made by Apple in recent years; the company bought facial recognition expert Polar Rose in 2010 and then it acquired Swedish mapping company C3 in late 2011.
