'Star Trek: Discovery' Season 2 Won't Be About Klingons

The Klingon War probably won't stay "hot" for long.

Though the trailers for Star Trek: Discovery suggest that the series will heavy focus on Starfleet’s brutal war against the Klingons, that won’t be the case for Season 2.

“Each season needs to be about a different thing,” executive producer Alex Kurtzman told Digital Spy on Tuesday. “I wouldn’t necessarily want to bring the Klingon War into season two.”

Considering that Starfleet eventually settles into a “cold war” with the Klingons, it makes sense that the show won’t place their conflict at the forefront for the entire series.

Kurtzman continues, “However, the results of the war are going to allow for a lot of new storytelling that will be the result of everything that happens and the people that are left behind; the casualties, the things that have grown in Starfleet as a result of the war. That’s what we’ll inherit in the second season.”

For a show as ambitious as Star Trek: Discovery,” it’s encouraging to see that the team behind it is already looking ahead to Season 2. Hopefully, moving away from the Klingons allows Discovery* to carve its own identity, and tell stories that aren’t as attached to pre-existing mythology.

On September 24, Star Trek: Discovery will have a traditional premiere on CBS at 8:30 p.m. Eastern, with the first and second episodes being available on CBS All Access immediately after. The following episodes will only be available through All Access.
