'MacGyver' producer faces OSHA fine of nearly $10K after stuntman injury

CBS' "MacGyver" was hit Tuesday with a "serious citation" and a $9,472 fine in connection with an injury suffered by a stuntman in August during shooting in Georgia.

Stunt coordinator Justin Sundquist suffered a serious head injury that required hospitalization. He was treated in an intensive care unit and later released.

After an investigation, the Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited the producer, Eye Productions Inc., "for failing to protect employees from hazards" while filming in Chattahoochee Hills, Georgia.

"OSHA investigated the incident after a stuntman was injured while performing a stunt from a moving vehicle traveling approximately 18 mph," the agency said in a news release. "OSHA issued a serious citation for failing to provide adequate head protection during stunts."

The release does not specifically name "MacGyver," but other news organizations, including Deadline and The Wrap, are reporting the citation and fine are related to Sundquist's injury. USA TODAY has reached out to OSHA and CBS for comment.

"The incident underscores the requirement for employers in the entertainment industry to implement better safety practices to protect actors and stunt persons from serious injuries," OSHA Atlanta-West official Keith Hass said in the news release announcing the citation and fine.

CBS has a 15-day period to decide whether to contest the findings before an OSHA review commission.

OSHA last year proposed a fine of $12,675, the maximum allowable, after the 2017 fall and death of a stuntman on "The Walking Dead," another series filmed in Georgia.
