It's the question on everyone's lips: when is George RR Martin finally going to finish The Winds of Winter?

Martin's sixth Game of Thrones novel has been seven years in the making so far, and in a new interview he has revealed that part of the reason the novel is taking so long is because of the pressure of the HBO TV series.

He told The Guardian: "The show has achieved such popularity around the world, the books have been so popular and so well reviewed, that every time I sit down I'm very conscious I have to do something great, and trying to do something great is a considerable weight to bear."

And then there's the added problem that The Winds of Winter is as complex and intricate as its predecessors.

"The Winds of Winter is not so much a novel as a dozen novels," Martin said. "Each with a different protagonist, each having a different cast of supporting players and antagonists and allies and lovers around them, and all of these weaving together in an extremely complex fashion.

"So it's very, very challenging."

Thankfully on good days Martin can forget about the sky high expectations of Game of Thrones fans and simply get lost in Westeros.

He said: "There are days when I sit down in the morning with my cup of coffee, I fall through the page and I wake up and it's dark outside and my coffee is still next to me, it's ice cold and I've just spent the day in Westeros."

When he's not working on The Winds of Winter, Martin's busy working on HBO's GoT prequel series – which will reportedly be called The Long Night.

Plus, he's also written a lengthy history of the Targaryen dynasty called Fire and Blood.
