APD to expand gunshot detection system to popular shopping centers
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Albuquerque Police is expanding its gunshot detection system to a big shopping area in Albuquerque. Police said the ShotSpotter technology will soon cover ABQ Uptown, the Winrock Town Center, and the Coronado Center.
“When the decision came that we were going to be expanding ShotSpotter, I wanted to make sure that we included areas where we have lots of people within the city area that could be impacted by an incident where we had an active shooter,” APD Chief Harold Medina said at a news conference on Wednesday.

The Coronado Center recently saw two incidents where a single shot was fired, resulting in panic among shoppers. Chief Medina said that during the incidents, they received calls from people asking if it was an active shooter. Medina explained that if ShotSpotter was in place, they quickly could have dispelled those rumors.
The city said the ShotSpotter expansion should be completed by the end of summer. The also plan to place the technology in other parts of the city. Those plans will be announced at a later date, officials said.
