APD: Driver apparently experienced medical episode before fatal, multi-vehicle crash at Tramway, Indian School

Apr. 19—Police say a driver apparently experiencing a medical episode went speeding through a foothills-area intersection, colliding with a truck and causing another to be sideswiped, before being pronounced dead at the scene Friday morning in Albuquerque.

The Albuquerque Police Department responded to the three-vehicle crash at Tramway and Indian School NE mid-morning.

According to police, a Volvo was going south on Tramway when it went through a red light at Indian School. The vehicle collided with a Ford truck that was facing north, waiting to turn west on Indian School.

"Witnesses stated the red Volvo was traveling at a high rate of speed, weaving in traffic and the driver appeared to be slumped over the steering wheel," APD said in a news release. "The third vehicle involved was a box truck that was facing northbound on Tramway Boulevard and the side of the vehicle was sideswiped as a result of the crash."

The male driver of the red Volvo — who was not identified by police — died at the scene. A female passenger in the Volvo and the male driver of the Ford truck were taken to a hospital in stable condition.

"Based on witness information and evidence on scene, speed appears to be a factor and it is believed that the driver of the Volvo experienced a medical episode prior to the crash," APD said.

North- and southbound Tramway were shut between Indian School and Lomas as a result of the crash, which remains under investigation.
