APD detectives arrest teen for shooting at Coronado mall

May 2—A 16-year-old boy accused of firing a shot inside Coronado Center in March was arrested on Thursday.

The Albuquerque Police Department took Julian Hernandez into custody at a home on Calle del Sueno NW, near Unser and Coors.

Hernandez is charged with negligent use of a firearm, APD spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said. Hernandez is being booked into the Bernalillo County Juvenile Detention Center.

Gallegos said detectives identified Hernandez in April as the juvenile who fired a shot as he exited the food court area of the mall at Menaul and Louisiana NE on March 30.

Gallegos told the Journal he did not know "if it was determined if the shot was fired inside or outside."

"(It was) right at the doorway," he said.

Gallegos said witnesses told police that a group of juveniles were seated at a table in the food court when a male teen grabbed a bag, yelled an obscenity and ran toward an exit. Another juvenile — later identified as Hernandez — ran toward the male teen while reaching for his waist and producing a firearm.
