Appalachian Power, sister company seek state approval of $237M upgrade in Botetourt County

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) -- Appalachian Power and a sister company are asking state regulators to approve a $237 million upgrade in Botetourt County.

The utility and AEP Appalachian Transmission Company filed a joint request Thursday with the Virginia State Corporation Commission seeking approval of the project.

The American Electric Power Co. subsidiaries want to build new facilities in and near the Cloverdale Substation, including a new extra high voltage substation yard. The existing yards would be upgraded and expanded.

The project also includes new transmission lines to connect the facilities.

Appalachian Power says in a news release that the improvements will address voltage and thermal problems, transmission congestion and equipment obsolescence.
