Apartment building condemned after fire

Nov. 6—HIGH POINT — A fire at an apartment building in northwestern High Point this past weekend left 13 residents having to find someplace to live, but no one was injured in the blaze.

A person who lived in the apartment where the fire is thought to have started — in a complex in the 100 block of Hartley Drive, across from the main branch of the High Point YMCA — reported about 2:30 a.m. Saturday that there was a fire in the building's chimney, Deputy Fire Chief Brian Evans of the High Point Fire Department said. When firefighters arrived they found flames spreading through the second floor of the two-story building at the Fox Hollow apartment complex.

All residents of the eight-unit building escaped unharmed. The local chapter of the American Red Cross is helping them find emergency shelter, he said.

Firefighters brought the two-alarm blaze under control in about an hour, Evans said.

The fire caused $750,000 to $1 million worth of damage, and the building has been condemned.

Investigators were at the site Monday continuing their investigation into the cause of the blaze, Evans said.

"I don't think it was malicious intent," he said.

Evans said that 38 firefighters and 20 units worked at the fire scene.
