Dogs can hear four times the distance of humans and higher-pitched sounds, so it's no wonder that Bonfire Night can leave pooches trembling under the sofa. To help our worried pets, a new dog anxiety helpline is launching to help keep pups calm on 5th November.

The all-natural dog food company, Edgard & Cooper, are the masterminds behind the live chat service that will run from 6pm to 11:30pm on Bonfire Night.

During that time, experts will be on hand to offer pet owners free advice on how to keep their dog calm and limit anxiety.

"Fireworks travel up to 150mph at up to 120 decibels, it’s no wonder our dogs suffer on Bonfire Night," co-founder Louis Chalabi told The Metro.

Cowering, trembling and hiding are common signs your dog is suffering a sensory overload. They might also bark and drool more, and become more needy.

Claire Stallard, Blue Cross animal behaviourist, says:

"November can be a really scary time for pets, as there is so much change in their lives. Darker evenings may mean they aren't getting the exercise they have been used to, then, over the Guy Fawkes' period, they face evenings of loud bangs and flashes. It's therefore important to try to minimise their exposure to the flashes and noises, and understand that pets may be very stressed around this time – hopefully our advice can help."

The Blue Cross recommends some simple ways to keep your dog at ease this year. They include:

  • Walking your dog earlier in the day on 5th November

  • Drawing the curtains before it gets dark

  • Closing all windows and doors

  • Creating a safe space or den for your pup with blankets and toys

Edgard & Cooper will be posting the number for their helpline on their website on 5th November.
