Anti-migrant signs attached to parking posts outside Colorado State Capitol

DENVER (KDVR) — What are described as hate speech signs were removed from the state Capitol grounds Friday morning.

These signs were bolted to posts near metal street signs and made to look like normal street signs. However, these signs featured the words hookers, migrants and undocumented.

Some migrants in Denver prefer encampments to shelters for the autonomy

The signs were first spotted outside the Colorado Capitol around 5:30 a.m. Friday.

“I think it definitely went overboard. Even having that kind of hate in your heart is a step too far,” Together Denver Organizer Amy Beck said.

FOX31 reporter Vicente Arenas also spoke to the person who spotted the signs before sunrise.

“I thought they were just some kind of caution signs. I actually thought they were legitimate signs from the city,” said the driver, who wished to remain anonymous.

The signs were attached to city-owned street signs on the edge of the East side of the state Capitol property.

One sign said, “Caution undocumented Democrats” and showed people running with weapons. One of the figures is depicted as pulling a child. The other said, “Migrant Hookers.” Below it, another sign reads $20.

“It’s very hurtful to me, it’s just a form of hate. I was saddened that somebody would actually go that far and put so much energy to do that,” the driver said.

Denver will stop emergently responding to migrants, shifting to a sustainable response

Capitol crews removed the signs, and the Colorado State Patrol is looking into how they got there. The signs appeared at the capitol as Denver continues dealing with an influx of migrants stirring a fiery debate over the crisis.

CSP said a person placing the signs here could face charges ranging from vandalism to criminal mischief. At this time, the agency has not identified the person who placed them there.

The Denver Police Department said it is aware of the signs that were posted and police are looking into it to find who placed them.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.
