Anthem Insurance Backs Part of House GOP Health Care Plan

Anthem is the nation's second-largest health insurer

The nation’s second-largest health insurance provider will support parts of the new health care plan revealed by House Republicans this week.

CEO Joseph Swedish sent a letter to the House Energy and Commerce and Ways and Means committees on Thursday, voicing support for parts of the American Health Care Act, Politico reported. The GOP plan was approved by the two House committees on Thursday, despite facing opposition from several conservative lawmakers and other health care providers.

In the Anthem letter, which was obtained by Politico, Swedish said the bill “addresses the challenges immediately facing the individual market and will ensure more affordable health plan choices for consumers in the short term.”

He endorsed parts of the plan that would repeal the Affordable Care Act’s health insurance tax and temporarily maintain cost-sharing subsidies, Politico reported.
