MEMPHIS – For a second straight year, Penny Hardaway will be tasked with totally rebuilding his Tigers roster as a third player has added his name to the transfer portal.

Freshman and former four star guard Carl Cherenfant has joined Jayhlon Young and Jonathan Pierre in putting his name in the portal. Cherenfant played in just 18 games, totaling just 10 points over the entire season to go along with 17 rebounds.

Cherenfant also becomes the third member of Hardaway’s four-player, 2023 recruiting class to leave the program, joining prized recruit Mikey Williams and his high school teammate JJ Taylor.

The only one left is Hardaway’s youngest son Ashton.

How hard of a rebuild will this be for Hardaway?

This is what the Tigers coach said right before the AAC Tournament about putting together a roster with so many transfers.

“When you’re putting teams together, 12, 13 guys every year, you never know when that’s going to gel,” Hardaway said. “When we won early, it spoiled all of us. Then when you go the other way, it’s just not, it doesn’t, the chemistry has to be there. It’s not just about talent.”

Right now, Hardaway only has three scholarship players left on his roster.

His son, Nick Jourdain and David Jones. Jones has yet to make his future plans known.

Jourdain announced that he plans to return to Memphis next season.
