Another secret weapon from Samsung’s Galaxy S5 possibly revealed
Shipments of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S4 may have fallen a bit short of the company’s lofty expectations in 2013, but 2014 is shaping up to be an entirely different story. In our review, we said that the Galaxy S4 had a feature spam problem. The phone was all over the place, packed to the gills with bells and whistles that detract from the phone’s real strengths. But it looks like Samsung could be turning a corner in 2014 with the Galaxy S5, and a new report may have uncovered yet another secret weapon that Samsung plans to use to rekindle the world’s love for high-end Galaxy phones.
Recent reports out of the East seemingly uncovered two main features coming to Samsung’s next-generation flagship smartphone. The first is one we have seen surface about a dozen times now: an industry-leading quad HD (2,560 x 1,440-pixel) display. The second, according to one report, is an eye scanner that will add a new dimension to the security on Samsung’s Galaxy S5.
Now, Korea-language IT Today is reporting that the Galaxy S5 may also feature a new killer combo: a next-generation 64-bit Samsung Exynos processor and 4GB of low-power DDR4 RAM.
Samsung unveiled the new 20-nanometer RAM chips on Monday, stating that its new chips offer 50% better performance than LPDDR3 RAM while consuming 40% less power. The new chips will target “large screen UHD smartphones, tablets and ultra-slim notebooks that offer four times the resolution of full-HD imaging, and also on high-performance network systems,” Samsung said in its press release.
Long story short, Samsung’s Galaxy S5 could end up being an absolute beast of a smartphone.
Beyond the quad HD display, eye scanner, 4GB of RAM and 64-bit 8-core processor, the Galaxy S5 is rumored to feature a 16-megapixel camera with new technology that improves low-light photo quality, a 4,000 mAh battery, Android 4.4 KitKat and at least one version with a premium metal case. The new flagship phone is expected to be unveiled sometime during the first quarter next year, possibly in February.
