Another election to fill McCarthy’s seat in U.S. Congress is on Tuesday

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE) – For voters in California’s 20th Congressional District, this is an election season that just won’t seem to end.

When Congressman Kevin McCarthy stepped down at the end of December, it left two openings: one for the remainder of his term, and one for the full term beginning in January of 2025.

The March 5 primary set the stage for the November run-off between Assemblymember Vince Fong and Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux for the full-term seat. On Tuesday, March 19, voters will make a selection to fill the remainder of McCarthy’s 2024 term.

“Our turnout so far is looking over 30,000 voters have already returned their vote by mail ballot,” said Fresno County Clerk James Kus.

Kus has been preparing for the March 19 election as Fresno County is one of four counties within the 20th district. Kern, Kings, and Tulare counties are the other three.

“The election is about a quarter of the county going from the city of Clovis south/southeast to the foothill regions,” Kus said.

Nine candidates are on the ballot. Kus says the results will be certified within nine days. If there is no clear-cut winner, a runoff between the top two candidates will be held in May, with the seat filled soon after that.

“Congress can actually decide to seat the winner much earlier than we would say this is the final result,” Kus said.

Vote centers in addition to the downtown Fresno main office will be open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Those who are not registered can do so in person at the vote centers until 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

Other vote center locations in Fresno County are in downtown Clovis at Armstrong and Third, Melody Park, the Sunnyside Library, and the Bear Mountain Library in Squaw Valley.
