Annual Winter Roots Festival begins in Marquette

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WJMN) – The Annual Winter Roots Festival to celebrate folk music and dance started in Marquette on Wednesday, March 13th and events will be happening till Saturday, March 16th.

“So, Winter Roots Festival started up about 4 years ago,” said Tristan Luoma, Hiawatha Music Co-Op Committee Member. “It was a collaborative event brought forth by Hiawatha Music Co-Op and Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center since then we have brought on different partners of the city of Marquette and brought on Peter White Public Library to celebrate folk music as how it fits into our local scene and the musicians in our community that uphold traditional folk American music.”.

The following that will be held are:

  • Performance by Skerryvore at NMU Forst Roberts Theatre. March 14th.

  • Hiawatha Traditional Acoustic Arts Performance at Ore Dock Brewing Company, March 15th.

  • Harmony Workshop with Sons of the Never Wrong at The Hiawatha Fold, March 16th.

  • Winter Roots Film Festival at Peter White Public Library Shiras Room, March 16th.

“It gives the community something fun to do in the winter months to melt away the winter blues,” said Louma. “An interesting year for a winter related theme festival but the good thing about local music is that it is good any time of the year. Depending on the conditions people are always aching to get out and hear new music and go with their friends to enjoy the local art scene. So, it is really cool to be able to offer a program for the community regardless of the weather.”
