Annual Oklahoma history symposium to be held in May

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — The Oklahoma Historical Society (OHS) will present its Oklahoma History Symposium called “Perspectives in History,” on Saturday, May 4.

Held from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at the Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City, the one-day symposium offers scholars, historians, authors and museum professionals a seminar to share their work with history fanatics.

Presentations will be focused on topics around Oklahoma’s history and sessions will be offered in professional development for museum professionals, volunteers and students.

After two decades, some closure for two families

Several different topics will be talked about at the symposium which will include Oklahoma cemeteries, Asian Americans in Oklahoma, American Indian doughboys, archaeological investigations, calabooses, working with minimally represented communities and much more.

The symposium is free and open to the public, however, attendees must register online in advance. The registration deadline to attend the symposium is Friday, April 26.

Edurne Pineda will also be speaking at the symposium. Pineda has been a Mexican diplomat for more than 25 years and specializes in consular affairs. She has been head consul of the new “Consulate of Mexico” office located in Oklahoma City since late 2022.

Through cultural events, educational programs and diplomatic initiatives, the consulate celebrates Oklahoma’s shared heritage and addresses the needs of the nearly half a million Mexican residents that live in Oklahoma.

OHS shares its mission which is to collect, preserve and share the history and culture of Oklahoma and its people. The OHS maintains museums, historic sites and affiliates across the state and displays Oklahoma’s rich history.
