Annual Golden Retriever gathering set in Mesa

Mar. 15—For the last four years, Renee Bellefeuille of Mesa has organized a reunion like none other.

She invites Golden Retrievers — and their owners, of course — to come and enjoy an afternoon in the spring sunshine at a local park.

Bellefeuille is doing it again for the fifth consecutive year, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. March 23 at Red Mountain Park, 7745 E. Brown Road, Mesa.

"It is hard for me to believe that this will already be the fifth annual event and it keeps getting bigger each year," she said.

Where owners and their dogs basically mingled the first time around, Bellefeuille added a philanthropic touch to the free event under the theme "Goldens Giving for a Good Cause."

"The event harnesses the enthusiasm of Golden Retrievers and their owners getting together and giving to good causes," she said.

"This year the local charity is Chandler-based P.A.W.S.S, and we are collecting training treats — as well as donations of cash or checks. P.A.W. S. S. stands for Pups and Warriors Side by Side. They provide disabled veterans, first responders, and qualifying family members assistance with training their dog to become a certified service dog."

Along with a charitable activity, Bellefeuille adds games, prizes and even a Golden Retriever T-shirt contest where owners are encouraged to wear their favorite T featuring the majestic yet friendly canine.

The event has grown steadily since her first in 2020.

"Last year over 90 Golden Retrievers attended," she said. "I expect we will set a new record this year. I really enjoy putting this event together each year and work to make it bigger and better each year."

While owners can just show up, those who have questions are welcome to call her at 602-793-9434.
