Anne Arundel County police: Officer involved in shooting

PASADENA, Md. (DC News Now) — The Anne Arundel County Police Department (AACOPD) said its officers were involved in a shooting on Thursday.

In a post, AACOPD said that around 1:30 p.m., units were at the 8600 block of Gambier Harbor after a report came in of a 61-year-old woman who was armed and was experiencing a mental health crisis.

AACOPD said that the woman had shot and killed a cat inside a home. When officers arrived, they told her to come outside of the home. She stepped outside briefly but went back inside the house. She then came back out with a gun.

Officers told her to drop the gun but she did not listen to their demands. She then pointed the gun at the officers. AACOPD said that “fearing for their safety,” the officers discharged their firearms, hitting the woman.

She was taken to the hospital and was reported to be in critical condition.

AACOPD said officers recovered a gun at the scene and a dead cat that had “apparent” gunshot wounds.

The officers were placed on administrative leave while the Office of Professional Standards review what happened.

Anyone with information about what happened is asked to call (410) 222-4700.
