Anne Arundel County elementary school teacher faces sexual abuse allegations

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — The Anne Arundel County Police Department arrested an elementary school teacher Thursday after several students accused him of sexual abuse.

Detectives began investigating Matthew Scott Banks Schlegell, 44, of Severna Park in March. Police said school administration officials and students at Severna Park Elementary School said he sexually abused several students.

The school system removed him as a teacher from the school immediately after being notified of the allegations.

Child Protective Services conducted forensic interviews of multiple children throughout the investigation. On May 15, Schlegel was charged with second-degree assault, sex abuse of a minor and other related criminal charges.
