Anna Kooiman is launching a cable news show in NYC. But she’ll keep living in Charlotte.

Anna Kooiman — a Charlotte native who made a name for herself as a New York-based Fox News anchor in the 2010s, moved to Australia for love, then returned to take a TV job in the Queen City in 2022 — is making another big move this month.

Professionally, at least. Personally, she’s not going anywhere.

NewsNation revealed to The Charlotte Observer Monday afternoon that the alumna of Myers Park High School and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington has joined the upstart cable news network as anchor of “NewsNation Live’s” weekend edition, with her official debut set for this Saturday.

Moving forward she’ll fill the 10 a.m.-1 p.m. time slot on Saturdays and the 11 a.m.-1 p.m. block on Sundays for the three-year-old channel, which has built a growing stable of recognizable hosts that also includes former CNN stars Chris Cuomo and Ashleigh Banfield.

Kooiman also will do some limited work as a correspondent during the week.

But while the weekend-anchor portion of the job requires her to work out of NewsNation’s studios in New York City, Kooiman’s plan is to maintain status strictly as a commuter to Manhattan. “I’ll be based here in Charlotte. My family’s not moving,” she emphasized in a phone call with the Observer on Tuesday morning. “We’re loving our life in Charlotte. This is just a big piece of me that has felt missing for a while.”

“I feel very fortunate that this very fine needle has been able to be thread, for me to remain based in Charlotte but to be able to get back into cable news and launch a brand-new show for a cable network that is growing as quickly as it is,” she continued, noting that NewsNation is trying to reach status as a true 24-7 news source — “and I’ll help be one of the missing pieces to make that happen for them.”

“This is definitely a sacrifice, for sure,” she said. “I’m just so blessed that I’ve got so much family support here, and that my husband’s on board.”

Kooiman and her husband have a 6-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter. Her parents still live in Charlotte as well.

She returned to the area two summers ago to serve as host of “Your Day with Anna Kooiman,” a lifestyle show produced by Charlotte-based Bahakel Communications and aired locally on WCCB-TV (Channel 18). She previously lived in Sydney, Australia, having followed her husband back to his home country after finishing up the 2016 election cycle and a roughly five-year stint in various roles at Fox News (including as anchor of its “Fox & Friends Weekend” show).

Prior to Fox News, Kooiman had spent three years as a host of WCCB morning show “News Rising.” She started her career in her college town of Wilmington at WWAY-TV.

So NewsNation — which has said Nielsen data indicates it is the fastest-growing cable news network in primetime — marks a return to harder news for Kooiman, on a network The Washington Post has asserted “aims to find the elusive middle ground of cable news television viewership.”

Said Kooiman: “I’m really excited to be back as a journalist, as a news anchor, about doing interviews again, letting Americans tell their stories ... and I love that it has positioned itself as a cable news network that is down the middle. You don’t find everywhere. ”

As for her “Your Day with Anna Kooiman” gig, she said the show “did not turn out to be exactly what we hoped it would be.”

But she also noted Bahakel last year won a Telly Award for a “Christmas at Dollywood” special she co-hosted. And generally speaking, “it was a great opportunity for me to be at Bahakel and do some lifestyle content for them while getting my family acclimated to ... not just a new house, but a new country — and getting our family settled and my husband finding a job and our kids getting settled into school and me getting settled into teaching my fitness classes here as well,” said Kooiman, who leads a cardio-strength class at the Harris Express YMCA in SouthPark once a week and classes tied to her Strong Sexy Mammas brand twice a week at the Harris YMCA on Quail Hollow Road.

“I’m happy with the lifestyle that I was able to live for the last couple of years,” said Kooiman, who turned 40 in February. “It’s just time for the next stage and phase.”

In addition to appearing on cable and satellite, Kooiman’s show will be available to watch via most major streaming platforms; at www.newsnationnow.com; and on the NewsNationNow app.
