A former neighbour of Angela Rayner has been interviewed by police for a second time in connection with the ongoing investigation into the two homes row, it has been reported.

Sylvia Hampson, 83, was a legal witness for the MP, signing a key mortgage document when she sold her Stockport home in 2015.

Mrs Hampson claimed that Ms Rayner asked her to sign the document, which stipulated it was her “principal property” even though she lived a mile away from her, nextdoor to her then-husband.

The pensioner has previously called Labour’s deputy leader a “f---ing liar” for claiming that she was living in a different address to her then-husband, which would have helped her to avoid paying a capital gains tax bill.

She has now been interviewed twice in a matter of days by police who are allegedly looking into a number of complaints against Ms Rayner, including a failure to pay capital gains tax, potential breaches of electoral law, and falsely claiming a single-occupancy council tax discount.

Capital gains tax question

The Ashton-under-Lyne MP has faced scrutiny about whether she should have paid capital gains tax on the 2015 sale of her council house on Vicarage Road, Stockport, owing to confusion about whether it was her principal residence or whether she was living with her then-husband at a separate address on Lowndes Lane.

Mrs Hampson told the Mail on Sunday she spoke to officers from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) about having signed the Transfer of Whole Registered Title (TR1) document, first on Friday April 19 and again on Monday April 21.

She said: “They asked if I could recall signing it. I told them it was my signature.”

A spokesman for the Labour Party said: “Ms Rayner will cooperate with any investigation and she is confident she followed the rules at all times.”

Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour leader, has backed his deputy saying: “We remain completely confident that Angela has complied with the rules at all times and it’s now appropriate to let the police do their work.”

GMP has been contacted for comment.
