LARGO, Md. (DC News Now) — Maryland Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Angela Alsobrooks said Wednesday that she will be victorious against former and popular Gov. Larry Hogan in their fall battle in a race that could help decide who controls the Senate.

Alsobrooks joined DC News Now on Wednesday for the first sit-down interview since she won the Democratic primary against Congressman David Trone.

The Prince George’s County executive has said for months that she is the only candidate who can beat Hogan, who previously served as governor in the blue-leaning state.

“I think that, again, this election is going to be not only about the future, but it’s also going to be about the stakes. We know how high the stakes are,” Alsobrooks said. “We know that this election is about retaining the majority in the Senate, making sure that we keep that majority out of the hands of a party that is led by Donald Trump.”

A May 9th Emerson College/The Hill/DC News Now survey showed Alsobrooks beating Hogan in a hypothetical matchup 48% to 38%.

Analysts expect millions of dollars to be raised in this race as the GOP eyes an attempt to flip the Senate red.

“One thing I can tell you is that I am a prolific fundraiser,” Alsobrooks said. “The one thing that you can see for yourself is that I have raised more money in a Senate primary than any Senate candidate in Maryland’s history. We will have the resources that we need. I will continue to raise the money.”

When asked if the race will get nasty, Alsobrooks said that she doesn’t think it will be necessary to define him in a negative way personally.

“I think he has a record that Marylanders will become aware of,” she said. “They will know for sure that he is a person who is not pro-choice, that he vetoed important abortion care legislation that would have expanded that care across the state. There are a number of other policy issues. This will be about the differences that we have.”

Alsobrooks said that she has a strong “grassroots coalition all across this state” that will help her defeat Hogan, despite his two previous wins against Democrats when he ran for governor.

“It’s a very powerful coalition of people from every walk of life,” Alsobrooks said. “I’ve enjoyed building that coalition and I’ve enjoyed not only talking about my own record but talking about a positive vision for our state.”

Alsobrooks said that the grassroots support will be significant, particularly with working families struggling to make ends meet.

“What I’ve come to understand from all of our families is the messages around economic opportunity about really bringing down the cost of living,” she said.
