Andy Warhol's Unemployment Rate

Today's chart of the day comes courtesy of one of the greatest and most famous artists of all time. It's Andy Warhol's 1984 "U.S. Unemployment Rate, and it's up for auction at Christie's, where it's expected to go for $20,000 to $30,000. The chart documents the early 1980s recession, and Amy Cappellazzo of Christie's told CNNMoney that the piece is "a pretty typical Warhol image of the period" and makes a statement about how the Reagan era saw the rise of economic data as pop culture. She added: "Economic data has become popular culture. While we used to think of it as being some kind of verified information only for people who are really knowledgeable about the economy, it's popular culture now. You can talk to a taxi driver about it."

News broke in September that the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts would be getting rid of its entire collection. Some of their pieces, included this one, are set to be sold at Christie's in a series of auctions.
