Someone is going to have bragging rights at the Chiefs facility for the next six months or so.

The first game Thursday at the Big 12 men’s basketball tournament at the T-Mobile Center had fourth-seeded Texas Tech taking on fifth-seeded BYU.

Texas Tech’s most famous alum is Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, while coach Andy Reid played at BYU and still supports his alma mater.

Reid was at Thursday’s game where he met Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark. The commish told Reid how glad the Big 12 was to have BYU.

“Congrats on everything, we rooted for Kansas City,” Yormark said, “and we love having BYU in the conference.”

The Deseret News’ Jay Drew shared a video of the meeting.

Reid, whose nickname is Big Red, was dressed in BYU colors, and he met with some school officials. Reid also took time to greet with fans.

Ahead of the tournament, Reid recorded a message for the BYU men’s basketball team.

In an interview earlier this week with the BYU television network, Reid talked about his strong connection with the school.

“It’s such a big foundation to where my career has gone,” Reid said. “The acquaintances I had there. Coach Lavell Edwards, being one of my mentors and really helping me along the way. So I’m forever grateful to BYU, and I met my wife there, which is probably the biggest thing.

“Twelve grandkids later, we’re still going strong, so I owe a lot to BYU.”

How great would it have been if Mahomes had been at the game? I would’ve loved to see video of Reid and Mahomes chopping it up during the game.
