Ancient astronomy highlighted at library lectures

Apr. 11—A four-part lecture series hosted at the St. Joseph Public Library beginning this weekend focuses on ancient astronomy.

The talks will be presented by Dr. Jay Lemanski and delve into the mysteries of ancient Mesopotamia. Each installment will address a different topic. Dr. Lemanski has a Ph.D. in medieval history and a degree in Assyriology.

The series begins at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at the Downtown Library, 927 Felix St. The sessions will explain ancient Mesopotamian astronomy, present actual cuneiform astronomical texts and debunk ancient alien theories.

Other sessions will occur on April 27, May 11 and May 25. They will cover cuneiform writing and language, the keeping of time and the three paths of Heliacal risings.
