Anadarko discovers natural gas off the coast of Mozambique

HOUSTON (AP) -- Anadarko Petroleum Corp. said Thursday that it discovered natural gas off the coast of East Africa.

Houston-based Anadarko said the gas is in Mozambique's Rovuma Basin. A discovery well encountered about 190 net feet of natural gas pay after being drilled to a depth of about 16,391 feet, under about 3,481 feet of water.

Anadarko said it's designing an initial two-well appraisal program to determine the extent of the gas field. Anadarko is the operator of the area that the well was drilled in and holds a 36.5 percent working interest.

Anadarko shares rose 99 cents to $80.44 in afternoon trading.
