An Amtrak train struck a vehicle trying to cross the tracks in Ixonia, police say

The driver of a vehicle struck by an Amtrak train in the Town of Ixonia on Wednesday was transported to a hospital for precautionary measures, police said.

According to a news release from Jefferson County Sheriff Paul Milbrath, deputies responded at 1:24 p.m. to a single vehicle versus train crash. A preliminary investigation at the scene determined the vehicle was going north on River Valley Road when it attempted to cross the tracks and was struck by the train, which was going east.

Marc Magliari, a public relations manager at Amtrak, said the train was delayed for about 3 hours and 40 minutes due to the accident, but it is now operating again.

"There were no injuries to our 129 passengers or 12 crew members," Magliari said.

The Ixonia Fire Department assisted at the scene.

Ixonia and Oconomowoc have seen several train-related accidents in the past decade. In May 2011, Michael S. Schmidt, 24, was struck by a train and killed in the 2600 block of Highway 16 in Ixonia.

Later that year in December, a 44-year-old Oconomowoc man, Michael Dragan, was killed when an Amtrak train hit his truck at an Ixonia railroad crossing.

In March 2019, no one was seriously injured when a freight train struck a semi truck in Oconomowoc. Six patients were treated as a result of the crash and were taken to a local hospital.

The driver of the semi truck, Kevin Hall of Indiana, was issued citations for failure to yield at a train crossing, unsafe backing and possession of THC.
