Amtrak begins service in Norfolk on Wednesday

Amtrak rolls out service in Norfolk, Va. on Wednesday, discounted tickets to DC available

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- Amtrak is rolling out passenger rail service from Norfolk, Va. starting Wednesday.

It marks the return of intercity passenger rail service to the city for the first time since 1977. The station is at Harbor Park in downtown Norfolk. The train will include a business car, cafe car and six coaches.

Discounted one-way fares of $19 for trips to Washington, D.C., are available through Dec. 30.

On weekdays, the train will leave from the station at Harbor Park at 4:50 a.m. and arrive in Washington at 9:44 a.m. On weekends, the train will leave Norfolk at 6:05 a.m. and arrive at 10:55 a.m.

Discounts also are available for veterans, active-duty military and their families, senior citizens and AAA members.
