A spin-off of series New Amsterdam is currently in the works at NBC.

The medical drama came to an end last year after five seasons, but Deadline has reported that the show will be returning to our screens, albeit in a different format.

The show's creator David Schulner is developing a spin-off series which is set 30 years after the events of the original show, with a working title of New Amsterdam: Tomorrow.

The spin-off will follow Luna Goodwin, the daughter of Dr Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold), who will follow in her father's footsteps by becoming the medical director of New Amsterdam hospital.

New Amsterdam: Tomorrow will have a futuristic twist and is expected to "explore the ways artificial intelligence would help advance the medical industry in the future".

Fans will remember that this new spin-off was actually set up in the final episode of New Amsterdam, where a young new medical director was introduced, and later revealed to be Max's daughter Luna as an adult.

Her speech in the auditorium was a throwback to a speech her dad Max made back in the pilot episode, with Luna even ending with his famous line: "How can I help?".

In the finale, Luna was played by Molly Griggs, but it is currently unclear as to whether she will reprise her role in the spin-off.

In 2023, Schulner explained to TV Line about why he and executive producer and director Peter Horton decided on the full circle ending involving Luna.

"You end where you begin," he said. "Max in that auditorium on his first day was where we started the show, so it just felt natural to end the show with the next medical director on her first day. Having that connection, her being inspired by Max to take this job just felt satisfying because it's as if it was planted from the beginning."

New Amsterdam is available to watch on Netflix in the US and Prime Video in the UK.
