On-site amputation for Grovetown construction worker after leg stuck in concrete curb machine, says Grovetown Police

GROVETOWN, Ga. (WJBF) – According to Grovetown Fire Rescue Chief Wayne Kent, a worker at a construction site inside the Deer Hollow Subdivision in Grovetown has had an work-related accident and became “entangled” with a concrete curb machine that extrudes concrete or asphalt for roadway curbing projects.

Grovetown Fire Rescue was called to the scene around 10 a.m. Tuesday morning, and, according to Chief Kent, began a prolonged extrication of the victim.

According to descriptions of the machine involved in the accident, inside it rotating augers pull concrete or asphalt through the machine smoothly and extrude it in a curbing shape beneath the machine.

During an assessment of the injured worker, according to Grovetown Fire Recue, first responders determined they’d need help freeing the injured worker and called a team of emergency physicians from Wellstar MCG Health to assist with the extrication.

According to Grovetown Police Department and a witness who called the accident in to WJBF said that an on-site amputation of a lower extremity had to be performed to free the victim’s leg, which was stuck inside the machine.

After the worker was freed from the curb machine, the Wellstar MCG Health AirCare was called and landed in the subdivision and airlifted the patient to an area hospital.

In addition to Grovetown Fire Rescue and Grovetown Police Department, Columbia County Fire Rescue confirms that they were also called to the scene along Deer Hollow Run and provided mutual aide, with Grovetown Fire Rescue leading the rescue operation.

The scene was cleared shortly after noon Wednesday, according to Grovetown Fire Rescue.

No further information on the health status of the injured worker is available at this time.
