‘Amillier was my life’: Father seeks answers in son’s slaying

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Corey Penn cherishes the time he had with his son Amillier Penn, affectionately known as Milli.

“Amillier was everything to me. My best friend. Amillier was my life,” Corey Penn said “So I’m kind of at a loss for words because I shouldn’t be here talking about my 15-year-old son in the past tense. He should be here.”

Amillier was shot and killed in broad daylight June 2 while playing football with friends on Umatilla Street near Madison Avenue in southeast Grand Rapids. There are unanswered questions about what happened.

“We just know that Amillier was trying to seek shelter at some point and he thought he made it to a safe zone and some person came out and started shooting and Milli didn’t make it,” Penn said.

Grand Rapids’ homicide count nearly doubled in 24 hours, chief says

On Tuesday, flowers and candles marked the spot where Amillier fell.

“Back there are two LED candles. We are going to keep those lit up, too. Yeah, we are going to keep coming for Amillier until Amillier gets justice,” Penn said.

He said his son was working toward a brighter future.

“Amillier wanted to do good, and he wanted to go to college. He was just about to start a job,” Penn said.

$3,200 reward for tips leading to arrest in teen’s shooting death

He said Amillier’s family won’t let his light dim.

“I wanted to continue to raise awareness of what is going on in the community here. And we are trying to solve my son’s murder. It’s very important that anyone with information comes forward,” Penn said.

A reward has been offered for information leading to an arrest in the shooting. Anyone with information can call Grand Rapids detective at 616.456.3380 or Silent Observer at 616.774.2345. Tips can be made anonymously.

“If you know anything, or if your child knows anything, just motivate them to connect with authorities so Amillier can have justice,” Penn said. “Reach out to an anonymous line and just render any information that you have. Our family is hurting. Milli’s mom is hurting. I’m hurting. Grandparents, cousins, friends — we are all hurting.”
