Connecticut receives AmeriCorps grant to support 211 teachers in low-income schools

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) -- Connecticut has been awarded a $169,000 federal grant to support the salaries of 211 teachers in low-income schools.

U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro says The AmeriCorps grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service will go to schools in Bridgeport, Stamford, Hartford, New Haven and Windham involved in the Teach for America program.

Teach for America is the national corps of recent college graduates who commit to teaching for two years in public schools around the country.

It's part of AmeriCorps, the national service program that supports nonprofit and faith-based organizations throughout the nation.
