American River College’s largest building remains closed, ultimate fate unknown

(FOX40.COM) — After Davies Hall at American River College closed more than seven months ago due to seismic concerns, Los Rio Community College District has an update on the future of the Carmichael campus’s largest building.

In an email to FOX40.com on Tuesday, a Los Rios Community College wrote, “We are currently exploring all of our options as it relates to Davies Hall and while we believe it’s likely to be rebuilt, we have not yet completely ruled out a retrofit.”

Davies Hall has stood on the American River Colleges campus since 1965 where its three floors have served as the hub for the majority of classrooms, faculty offices and study spaces for the campus.

In September, the Division of State Architects found the building posed a safety risk in the case of a seismic event.

As a response to these findings, the college decided to immediately move all classes from Davies Hall and conduct distance education on a temporary basis until other classroom locations could be found.

Los Rios continued in their email to FOX40.com that whether they retrofit or completely rebuild the building, their earliest estimate for reopening will be 2029.

“Either pathway will require quite a bit of funding,” Los Rios continued in their email. “Looking at some of the funding options and their related timelines, our earliest estimate for a reopening would be 2029. At this time we do not have a specific plan or timeline for the building in place.”
