American Idol has been renewed for season 23 by the network ABC.

This exciting announcement comes just a week prior to season 22's grand finale, which'll see either Jack Blocker, Abi Carter, Triston Harper, Will Moseley, or Emmy Russell crowned this year's champion.

According to Deadline, in light of judging panelist Katy Perry's exit, the reality competition's bosses have been speaking to potential high-profile replacements, although no deal has been struck yet.

The 'Teenage Dream' popstar came forward with her imminent American Idol departure while appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! back in February.

Questioned about how long she's likely to stay on the panel alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, Perry replied: "Well, you know, this fall, this September, I'm going to be doing this huge music festival in Brazil called Rock in Rio. It's really exciting.

"It's a big deal for people all over the world, especially my Brazilian fans. So I think this will probably be my last season for Idol."

Reacting to audible gasps around the studio audience, she caveated: "I love Idol so much. It's connected me with the heart of America but I need to feel that pulse of my own beat."
