‘American Gods’ Sneak Peek: Cloris Leachman Steals the Scene as Zorya Vechernyaya

Have you heard the Good News, true believers? On May 7, Bryan Fuller’s adaptation of the Neil Gaiman bestseller American Gods will be graced by a visit from a comedy goddess. The immortal Cloris Leachman has a guest spot in Gods‘ second episode, “The Secret of Spoons,” and Yahoo TV is premiering an exclusive clip of her appearance. Leachman plays Zorya Vechernyaya, the eldest and most eccentric of three sisters who have their roots in Slavic mythology. Their Chicago home becomes a temporary rest station for Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) and his employer, Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane), as they continue their cross-country road trip on a mission that remains a mystery to Shadow … at least for now.

In the scene, Zorya is fixing a literal meat-and-potatoes dinner for the weary travelers and, as a good guest should, Shadow thanks her for her efforts. “I’m not a good cook,” his host replies with hilarious candidness, admitting that, in her homeland, she was accustomed to being served rather than doing the cooking and serving. “Learning is beneath me,” she concludes. Aspiring comedy performers, on the other hand, still have a lot to learn from Leachman’s scene-stealing work.

American Gods airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on Starz.
