American Apparel key sales metric up 10 pct in May

American Apparel's sales in established stores rise 10 percent, lifted by online shopping

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- American Apparel Inc. said Thursday that revenue in stores open at least a year, a key measure for retailers, rose 10 percent in May.

Sales in stores grew 7 percent, while online sales, which are also included in the metric, increased 37 percent. Revenue from stores open at least a year strips away the impact of recently opened or closed sites.

Total sales grew 13 percent to $55.6 million last month, the fastest pace of growth this year. The company got a big boost from its wholesale business, which sells clothing to other distributors and screen printers.

American Apparel, based in Los Angeles, operates 247 stores in 20 countries.

Its shares added 4 cents, or 2 percent, to $2.03 in midday trading Thursday.
