New Ambassador to UK faces numerous complex challenges, must prepare accordingly – Former Ukrainian FM

Diplomat and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Pavlo Klimkin, speaking on Radio NV on May 12, shared insights on the anticipated role of former Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief General Valerii Zaluzhnyi as Ambassador to the UK.

“First of all, of course, he will have to change, because a military career and a diplomatic career are still two different paths," Klimkin said.

"There, obviously, previous experience will be useful, but he will also have to acquire new skills, this is also obvious."

Britain is not only one of our important partners, but also a difficult reality now, because in second half of the year elections will be held there and the government is likely to change. American elections for British, are also a very important indicator and point of reference, Klimkin adds.

“It's very important to talk to the British, both military and non-military," Klimkin said.

"There are dozens of complicated issues that will need to be addressed not just at general geopolitical level, but in detail. And then there is the economy. So there is a lot to do."

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed Commander-in-Chief of Armed Forces of Ukraine Valerii Zaluzhnyy on Feb. 8.

Zelenskyy approved Zaluzhny's candidacy for post of Ukraine's ambassador to the United Kingdom on March 7. The president said that general asked for this position himself.

Zelenskyy signed a decree appointing Zaluzhnyi as Ukraine's ambassador to the UK on May 9.
